Dhaka, Mar 2 -- Construction work on a permanent ground for the Dhaka International Trade Fair (DITF) will begin before the government hands over power to a caretaker administration, Commerce Minister Abdul Jalil said here yesterday.

He made the announcement while closing the 43-day gala show of domestic and foreign consumer goods at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar,

The Commerce Ministry is looking for a site in the Parade Ground to hold the annual event as the present spot has been reduced for construction of an international conference centre.

The DITF 2001 was earlier scheduled to end on February 19, but extended by 12 days to facilitate stall owners to cover up their business losses due to hartals.

The commerce minister handed over prizes to the best decorated stall, pavilion and mini pavilion.

FBCCI president Yussuf Abdullah Harun, Secretary of the Prime Minister’s Office Ghulam Rahman Commerce Secretary Suhel Ahmed and acting vice president of Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) MN Islam also spoke at the concluding function.

The Commerce Minister said the fair over the years have become a great congregation of consumers and entrepreneurs from both home and abroad.

He hoped that the fair would encourage local entrepreneurs to further improve quality of their products and give foreign entrepreneurs an idea of tastes of local consumers.
